You need these in your arsenal!
0 people found this helpfulI have been using these for 40 years for walleye. They catch so many more fish than the standard style tip up it’s not even close! You can adjust the amount of movement the tipup gives the bait by adjusting the top arm of the tipup using a spring on the back side of the upright part of the tipup. They should have two different springs. One is heavy ( strong winds) the other is light (gentle breeze). As the wind blows, the arm moves up and down jigging your bait. You adjust the amount of movement by sliding a tab on the upright arm giving the upper arm more or less tension on the spring and causing the arm to move a lot or just a tiny bit. You place the flag on the back side of the spool and when a fish takes line it moves the spool so that it pushes the flag up and off of spool signaling a bite! I use a large sized teardrop with a lively shiner or a small octopus hook with a shiner, small split shot a foot above and it’s game on! Keep the hole from freezing so the fish can take line since it’s not below the waterline. I use these every time I’m out unless it’s so cold the holes freeze up right away, then I use the Frabil wood tipups. Be somewhat gentle with them when it’s real cold because they can crack when brittle. Only had that happen once in 40 years but it can happen. I use the windlass tipups with the smaller spool. Get yourself a windlass or two and catch more ‘eyes this winter!
